Flu season is here and most of us haven’t gotten around to getting our flu shot yet. In case you have a sore throat, there are five ways to soothe it:
). Frozen fruit or yogurt bars. There are many out there if you don’t feel like making your own. I like Dreyers with no sugar added, and since one is only 30 calories, enjoy many all day long. Let small pieces melt for a minute on the back of your throat. The cold numbs the pain.
). Drink herbal tea. Research shows that coating your throat with herbal teas that contain slippery elm bark, marshmallow root or licorice root coat irritated membranes and reduce discomfort, but any tea feels good.
). Tame sratchiness with saltwater. Eliminate phlegmn by mixing 1/2 tsp. salt with 4 oz. warm water and gargling four times a day.
). Get relief with steam. Fill your sink with very hot water. Place a towel over your head to lock in the steam and breathe through your mouth for several minutes. Steam helps clear mucus from nasal passages. This lessens nasal drip which causes throat discomfort. Repeat several times a day.
). Ease swelling with Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin). The Ibuprofen “family” stops mucous membranes from sending pain signals to the brain. Take a pill with chicken soup.
