Originally from Sicily, blood oranges are now grown in Texas and California.  Blood oranges, orange oranges (ha, ha) combined with pine nuts and thin slices of red onion make a refreshing salad over field greens.     Interesting, Mary Alice– you and Rob had them in Spain. I’m guessing there are various varieties. Their distinctive dark flesh color is due to the presence of anthocyanin, a pigment common to many flowers and fruit, but uncommon in citrus fruits.
