Exercise– for Body and Spirit

Happy St Patricks Day.   The Irish love hiking in their beautiful green hills. Hiking is great exercise that builds muscle mass, and increased muscle mass burns fat.  That’s right.  Muscle burns fat.  Exercise increases and tones muscles, raising our metabolic rate.  When we work out regularly, we even burn calories when we’re sleeping.

A toned body has many benefits– the physiological part that makes enzymes and other bodily functions work better, but also the emotional side. We’re happier, but I think that is physiological also.

Exercise certainly nourishes our spirit, Mary Alice, as do other things. A real epidemic in our society is “spiritual heart disease” which is the experience of low self-esteem combined with feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Isolation is bad for us. I’m glad I like in a bustling apartment complex where people chat when they go to the mailboxes. Often we wander from there to a courtyard to sort through it, tossing the junk mail into a paper recycling container. Anyway, it’s nice chatting with people.
