Exercise– for Body and Spirit

Friends, hands down, the best best belly busting exercise for shaping and toning belly muscles is…the bicycle maneuver!  Like Pilates, it targets the lower abs and core.  Lie on your back and raise your legs in the air, with your hands loosely clasped behind your head. Do not pull at your neck.  Begin moving your legs as though riding a bike, and then pull your upper body with the stomach muscles towards your legs, lightly touching the opposing knee with each elbow. This opposing movement targets waist and back. Ensure your legs are fairly high up, or you will rapidly tire your leg extensors before the stomach. They should not be raised right up but should be at 45 degrees or more. Keep that up for 3 whole minutes and you can rest assured that by activating muscles, we activate our metabolism.  People who maintain abdominal muscles defy their age. flat_stomach_workout_1 by mewall82

    Kathleen, I couldn’t agree with you more. For one thing, people with toned abs naturally eat less quantity. It must have to do with pressure on the stomach, I’m not sure.

    Reba, it seems to be true, but I haven’t found studies that show that. What is proven is that toned muscles cause our bodies to burn more calories. It’s nice for us, as we lose body fat, we see muscle definition.

    It’s a sweet metabolism boost alright. I am going to replace crunches with the bicycle manuever before I swim laps.
