Places– of Charm

Daisi Hill Farm in Millerton, NY is the place to go for shooting pumpkins out of a makeshift cannon.  Below, the tank and truck take the impact.  As Amy Virshup writes for the New York Times, some people like their pumpkins baked into pies with cinnamon and nutmeg.  Others like to carve them into goblin faces, illuminated with candles.  Amy Virship likes them hurled at 50 miles per hour by a medieval weapon or shot out of an air cannon to splatter with a satifying “Thwock!” into brilliant orange shrapnel.  Pumpkin farmer Donald Totman has created his own entertainment industry.  On a busy weekend 1,000 pounds of pumpkin might be smashed.  Totman started with a trbuchet (catapult) but currently has added an air cannon that shoots orange ammo 1,500 feet toward a metal tank.

  1. If I lived near one of these, I couldn’t resist going with my grandson D’mitri. He’s in third grade and would probably learn something about the science side of pumpkin shooting. There are complicated equations to describe motion.
