Places– of Charm

Tulare, California hosted the World Ag Expo which usually attracts an estimated 100,000 visitors. L.A. Times reporter P.J. Huffstutter wrote, “Rising commodity prices may be stoking inflation worries abrod and may pinch consumers at the grocery store, but for farmers, good times are rolling.”  Below is a luxury tractor, priced at $575,000.  I’d like to get up top to this place of charm!  This tractor is decked out with heated leather seats, a cell phone charging station, and a place to plug in an iPod.  What’s really interesting is that many farmers don’t even blink at the price tag.  Harlan Reese, a wheat and corn farmer from Illinois said, “When times are good, you invest in your operation.”  This tractor is produced by International Harvester, and the IH model is the Steiger Quadtrac tractor.

I understand agricultural exports will reach a record $126.5 billion in fiscal 2011. This is an increase of $13.5 billion from forecasts made last summer. It’s an increase of $17.8 billion over 2010 tallies.

I’ve attended the Ag Expo. It’s a cross between a state fair and a tractor/farm equipment showroom. Business is good for all, even the dairy industry which is recovering from fallen milk prices.

Yup, strawberries, too! California is the nation’s biggest nut tree producer, and the U.S. exports nuts to Canada, the European Union and Japan. Nut sales are also strong in Mexico and are seeing a surge in some of the Asian countries. These are places where government trade envoys and nut associations are doing aggressive marketing.

China (as well as So Korea, Taiwan and India) import U.S.’s pistachios, almonds, and walnuts. Maybe in the future they will grow their own, but I’m not sure what climate conditions they have.
