There were some interesting peasant women who could carry that off, but I’d make a cap of my own and go as Maid Marian (or Marion) is the love interest of the legendary outlaw Robin Hood in English folklore. Maid Marian was in originally a “shepherdess” figure associated with May Day. Her character may also have been influenced by the image of the Virgin Mary[citation needed]. Her role as the love interest of Robin Hood dates to the 16th century. That makes her a fairy tale figure.

In fairy tales and in Greek mythology, women sometimes dressed as men. Athena often went to the aid of people in the guise of men in The Odyssey.

As a guy, I’d probably do the cross-dressing thing and create some sort of veil-hat. Hagbard in the Scandinavian legend of Hagbard and Signy (the Romeo and Juliet of the Vikings). After having slain Signy’s brothers and suitors, Hagbard was no longer welcome in the hall of Signy’s father Sigar. Hagbard then dressed up as one of his brother Haki’s shieldmaidens to gain access to the chambers of his beloved.
